Sep 03 to Sep 06 The summer festival season ends on a suspended high note with your Edmonton Symphony Orchestra filling the river valley skies with the sound of music. Symphony Under the Sky returns for its 16th annual outdoor music festival at Hawrelak Park from September 3rd – 6th, 2010. The always charming conductor Bob Bernhardt returns to lead the orchestra for his fifth consecutive year. With special guest artists Karen Gomyo and Jim Witter, guest conductor Claude Lapalme, and Edmonton’s own Knock School of Irish Dance, the ESO’s concert repertoire will range from Celtic to Canadian, John Williams to Elton John, and Bach to Brahms.

The Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City exhibit is an outdoor reconstruction of an actual refugee camp, where experienced MSF staff (doctors, nurses, logisticians) guide visitors through a 40 to 60 minute interactive tour, explaining crucial elements for survival in a refugee or internally displaced people (IDP) crisis. Each visitor learns some of the challenges a refugee or IDP faces in trying to access food, shelter, water and medical care.

DRAW begins at 12 PM with family-friendly drawing activities: Latitude 53’s gallery space will be sectioned into areas for collaborative drawing and arranged for activities like Exquisite Corpse, a collaborative drawing game invented by the Surrealists where players add onto a shared drawing without knowing its entire content. The gallery will also welcome local artists to help guide projects and produce their own showcase work. Dec 11 to Jan 02 This December tradition sees approximately 200 private homes along 148th Street, from 100th Avenue to 92nd Avenue, adorned with impressive Christmas light displays. Over three weeks, thousands of visitors stroll Candy Cane Lane, admiring the imaginative and often quirky decorations. Sleigh rides along the street are also available. Donations to the Edmonton Food Bank are much appreciated at the on-site collection points.
