From the Ground Up More Info
|
+ My Favorites Apr 10 to May 01 Remember being six years old, in grade one, opening your first box of pencil crayons. Oh! Which color to choose first. I never want to forget that moment! So says St. Albert artist Shirley Cordes-Rogozinsky
Her enthusiasm for creating with colour has never waned. She is still just as excited about the colour choices for her abstract oil paintings as she was as a child with her box of crayons. Her creativity has matured and the depth of feeling invoked by her themed abstracts is compelling, and as her audience we sense her excitement and feel the energy. Cordes-Rogozinsky recently came across the work of fabric artist Margo Fiddes and was struck by the wonderful organic nature of her quilts. She was sure that she had found a kindred spirit and the feeling that they should exhibit together was overpowering. Shirley did not ignore those feelings and the result is a collaborative showing of their work in April at Art Beat Gallery in St. Albert Emerging artist Margo Fiddes creates quilted artworks that simultaneously defy and celebrate the word “quilt”. From a distance, a delicate blade of lily of the valley in sharp detail strikes a pose against a darkened blurred backdrop. Upon closer inspection, however, there’s something a little different about this artwork. Her medium is fabric and her ‘brush’ a sewing machine. She controls the extent of abstraction in her pieces through the placement of seam lines and the selection and arrangement of the prints and pattern of the fabrics themselves. Margo’s mastery of the quilt medium makes her work unique from other contemporary landscape and nature quilts artists. The title of their joint exhibit “From the Ground Up” reflects the theme of the work – growing things – but is also relevant to the process of their creativity. Both artists start with a basic substrate and proceed to layer material onto it until the moment the work reaches its climax of completion.

+ My Favorites Jun 02 to Jun 05 Dreamspeakers Film Festival will be held this year in conjunction with West Edmonton Mall Aboriginal Days. Take in the Walk of Honour luncheon, Film Cafe, Film Screenings and Youth Day.
Tinyan has never run out of subjects for his paintings. His ideas are numerous and vary in theme, from his fine detailed floral still-lifes and majestic harbor scenes, to his expansive landscapes, one can see the way his strong strokes and bold bursts of color capture the drama of nature and everyday life. Tinyan Chan paintings revel in the contrasting values of white birch trees standing beside a deep, dark river, the exuberant and undisciplined scattering of patches of brilliant color throughout, and the influence of both Chinese and western styles. His work is impressionism; his application of colours is mixed by the viewer’s eye to create a visual whole.
Linda Willard’s raw material is formless clay from the earth until her hands start to work it into a sculpted vessel or figure. Each piece starts with an idea of shape and size, but with no other boundaries. Her finished forms have simple lines that provide a canvas for nature to add its own variations of colour and tone during the vagaries of the firing process. Her interest lies in the unexpected but controlled world of alternative firing where ambient temperature, humidity, or other environmental factors add an element of surprise to the final outcome. Her finished pieces are pleasing to the senses and the viewer can sense the energy generated in the process of creation.
