Wayne Gretzky and the Stanley Cup

Artist: John Weaver | Material: bronze | Date: 1989 | Location: 118 Avenue and 74 Street

In sincere appreciation, admiration and respect, a larger-than-life statue of former Edmonton Oiler captain and NHL hockey legend "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky was unveiled on August 27, 1989 at the primary north entrance to Rexall Place. Sponsored by Molson Breweries, this striking bronze monument features what many consider to be the greatest hockey player in the world, holding the coveted Stanley Cup high overhead. Prior to his trade to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988 - a transaction that shocked and saddened Edmontonians - Gretzky had spent nine remarkable seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, shattering numerous records (many of which remain unbroken) and leading the exciting young dynasty to four consecutive Stanley Cups.

Voicing the sentiments of an entire city, the plaque underneath the imposing figure bears in part the inscription: "Wayne Gretzky - A true champion and gentleman of dedication and character whose talents brought world recognition to the City of Edmonton."

Former Edmontonian and world-renowned Canadian sculptor John Weaver was awarded the daunting task of immortalizing the sports superstar. In addition to his striking tribute to Edmonton's beloved #99, Weaver has created numerous other but equally significant and commanding works, which are displayed throughout the city as well as across Canada and the U.S.
