Northern Lights Northern Sights

Alberta's North is known for its stunning sunsets
and abundant natural areas.
Nowhere does the legend of Alberta's endless blue skies ring truer than in northern Alberta. With only five percent of Alberta's total population, the magnificent north offers vast forests and sparkling lakes, an expanse of parkland dotted with numerous towns and dynamic young cities.

A fly-fisherman's dream, northern Alberta boasts hundreds of lakes and wild rivers full of trout, pike, walleye and perch. Birdwatchers will delight at the sightings of osprey, bald eagle, blue heron, as well as the rare trumpeter swan.
History buffs will find plenty to explore at museums throughout the north country. St. Paul offers a Cultural Centre and Museum, Fort McMurray tells the story of oil sands development and technology at its Oil Sands Discovery Centre, and the Grande Prairie Museum in Grande Prairie showcases fossils, rocks, a pioneer village, and wildlife displays. Meanwhile, a number of art galleries celebrate the aboriginal culture of the first inhabitants of northern Alberta.
Parks abound in this rugged region. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wood Buffalo National Park straddles the border with the Northwest Territories. The park was founded in 1922 to protect the bison herds, the park is home to the largest free-roaming bison herd in the world.

Northern Lights
The spectacular aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, glow bright near Fort McMurray and the sky has never seemed bigger than when serving as a backdrop for endless forests. Alberta North country is one detour you must take.
