Shopping in Edmonton

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Edmonton, Alberta.
The city of Edmonton brings a diverse mix of shopping experiences to Alberta ranging from Canada's largest shopping mall to artsy neighbourhoods. The province's capital city is great place to enjoy a dose of retail therapy, no matter one's particular shopping style, whether it be funky boutiques or designer stores.

SHOPPING MALLS

It's hard to mention Edmonton's shopping scene without singling out West Edmonton Mall. Housing more than 800 stores and services, this shopping and entertainment complex is the country's largest shopping mall. However, visitors don't have to be shopaholics to truly appreciate its magnificence. Along with shops and restaurants, the mall also boasts its own Chinatown, a theme park, a tropical indoor water park, an ice rink and sea lion shows.

Although West Edmonton Mall offers enormous shopping possibilities, Edmonton also has a multitude of other malls worth visiting. In the city's downtown core shoppers will find the large Edmonton City Centre, the designer-packed Commerce Place and the upscale Manulife Place. The busy Kingsway Mall and Southgate Centre are popular destinations outside of the downtown area.

BIG-BOX SHOPPING

For spenders who like to shop big-box style, South Edmonton Common is definitely worth a visit. South Edmonton Common is a newly developed shopping centre that includes everything from clothing stores to home decor centres. The massive complex is spread over 320 acres (129 ha), making it one of the largest open-air retail developments in North America. Wal-Mart Super Centre, Home Depot, Ikea, Future Shop and Staples are just a few of the stores that can be found in the shopping centre, along with dozens of popular restaurants, pub chains and an Odeon cinema.

SHOPPING DISTRICTS

Whyte Avenue
Shoppers visiting Whyte Avenue, located in the city's Old Strathcona neighbourhood, can weave in and out of independent and brand-name stores housed in charming historic buildings. Trendy boutiques, art galleries, book stores, quirky gift shops and eclectic antique stores can be found along the tree-lined avenue. After a busy day of purchasing or window shopping, visitors can unwind over a meal in one of Whyte Avenue's numerous cafes and restaurants.

124th Street
West of Edmonton's downtown area is 124th Street, an area filled with beautifully preserved Edwardian buildings and specialty stores. Known for its high concentration of art galleries, 124th Street is a great place to view mesmerizing local and national art. High Street Mall is also located in this area and features an assortment of interesting stores and boutiques.
