POPULAR HAUNTS

Within the city's many popular districts and neighbourhoods and along its trendy streets, avenues and boulevards, visitors will find abundant shops, restaurants, galleries, festivals and various cultural venues.

There is always something going on in downtown Edmonton, particularly in the Arts District. In this hub of arts and culture, individuals seeking an enriching experience can enjoy a concert by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, take in a theatrical performance at the Citadel Theatre or view the collection of over 5,000 regional, national and international works of art at the Art Gallery of Alberta. The district's heart, Sir Winston Churchill Square, is a favourite gathering place and hosts important celebrations such as the annual New Year's Eve party and many of the city's festivals. This area is also home to impressive and important buildings such as City Hall and the Alberta Legislature Building. Along 104th Street are numerous specialty stores and charming cafes and restaurants. This street also hosts the 104th Street City Market every Saturday during summer. Downtown is also home to Chinatown (97th Street) and the Avenue of Nations (107th Ave). In these multicultural areas, visitors will find abundant ethnic restaurants and stores.

Just west of downtown is one of Edmonton's oldest neighbourhoods, the Old Glenora District. This popular area is situated between 124th and 142nd streets, south of 107th Avenue, and offers stunning views of the North Saskatchewan River valley. Within this district, along 124th Street between Jasper and 111th avenues, visitors will find plenty one-of-a-kind shops, quaint cafes and elegant restaurants while strolling cobbled sidewalks.

South of downtown and the North Saskatchewan River is the trendy Old Strathcona District where visitors can enjoy live music in the pubs, stimulating live shows at the theatre, exclusive goods and apparel in unique shops, authentic ethnic food and numerous festivals. The busiest street within this district is most certainly Whyte (82nd) Avenue with its mixture of popular chain stores, boutiques and venues such as the Princess Theatre, which offers international, art and alternative films in a restored 1915 theatre.

While not a neighbourhood per se, the West Edmonton Mall offers many of the facilities and services that can be found in other popular districts, including a luxurious hotel, three themed streets, amusement park attractions and over 800 stores and 100 eateries in an area that covers approximately 48 city blocks.

ENTERTAINMENT

Edmonton offers both family and adult-oriented entertainment in the form of gut-wrenching rides at its amusement parks, blockbuster movies at its theatres, live sports and concerts at its stadiums and nail-biting gaming at its casinos.

Edmonton is home to a number of amusement parks but none as famous as Galaxyland, the world's largest indoor amusement park. With 29 rides, including a 14-storey, triple-loop roller coaster, this midway offers thrills year round at the West Edmonton Mall, despite the weather. The mall is also home to the World Waterpark, a water park with slides, bungee jumping and a wave pool, and Ed's Rec Room, an adult playground with billiard tables, bowling lanes, game rooms, a cigar lounge and a dance floor. Fun such as five- and ten-pin bowling, go-karts, mini-golf, batting cages, bumper boats, laser tag, fun houses and corn mazes can all be found at amusement parks located throughout the city.

Host to numerous national and international sporting events and concerts, the city has a number of arenas and stadiums that seat from a few thousand up to 60,000 at the Commonwealth Stadium. While no Las Vegas, Edmonton is also home to its share of impressive casinos, most of which offer live entertainment and on-site dining as well as several that include an on-site hotel. The Edmonton Marriott at River Cree Resort Casino is no exception with numerous restaurants, a sports bar, night club, two NHL-sized hockey rinks and a 255-room hotel.

LEARNING & HISTORY

Whether exploring Edmonton's exciting past or learning about the inner workings of the human body, both young and old alike will have fun expanding their minds at any one of the area's many museums, interpretive centres, libraries or science centres. The city's museums pay tribute to important items of everyday life such as telephones, vehicles, aircraft and locomotives, as well as the area's policing and military past, and individuals and ethnic communities that settled the area and made it what it is today. The curious will learn what day-to-day life was like on the prairies in the early 1900s at Fort Edmonton Park or they can explore exhibits on bugs, fossils and gems at the Royal Alberta Museum. Visitors can also encounter both indigenous and foreign plants and wildlife while visiting the Valley Zoo.

ACTIVE EDMONTON
