Downtown Edmonton
Downtown Edmonton 1
Edmonton is a city that offers a wide variety of arts, culture, activities and attractions, however these aren't the only draw for guests in the city. As the capital of Alberta, Edmonton is home to the Provincial Legislature, ensuring a steady stream of business travellers and politicians to the city. Consequently, the list of business accommodations is comprehensive, with many hotels providing a business centre with Internet access, fax service and more. On the other end of the spectrum, Edmonton has also earned the nickname of “Festival City”, an homage to the ubiquity of entertainment and celebrations in the city. Locating an accommodation that is convenient to a planned itinerary is an integral part of an enjoyable trip, be it a business or a leisure visit. Edmonton offers lodging suited to both business trips and vacations with hotels and motels to suit a variety of budgets.

In the following article, WorldWeb.com Travel Guide offers suggestions for different types of lodging in the Edmonton area, giving travellers a number of options based on proximity to attractions and other Edmonton amenities.

The University of Alberta (U of A) is known throughout the province as a prestigious post-secondary institution, drawing many students from both around the province and across the country. Nearby available accommodation includes dorms for students as well as hotels and restaurants in the vicinity for accommodating visiting parents. Located on the edge of the U of A, the Campus Tower Suite Hotel is a convenient choice. The U of A is also well situated to many other services and amenities in Edmonton.

Edmonton International Airport

Located south of Edmonton near Nisku and Leduc, the Edmonton International Airport is one of the main hubs for travellers arriving to the area. A number of hotels offer shuttle service from the airport to their respective locations, however there are also options for lodging near the airport. Along with accommodations, the Edmonton International Airport and the Nisku area feature restaurants, shops, currency exchange kiosks and other essential traveller services.

West Edmonton Mall

West Edmonton Mall is one of the more popular visitor destinations for travellers to the Edmonton area. Featuring the equivalent of 49 city blocks of shops and services, West Edmonton Mall is also home to a waterpark, amusement park rides, restaurants and more. The Fantasyland Hotel is located at the southwest corner of the mall and gives guests direct access to the retail shops, attractions and other amenities under one roof.

Whyte Avenue and Downtown Edmonton

Whyte Avenue is famous for it's bars and cultural attractions, placing it among the top destinations on many Edmonton itineraries. Though there are limited accommodation choices in the immediate area, the Varscona Hotel on Whyte provides upscale lodging with valet parking, a fitness centre and other amenities to make both the business and leisure traveller feel at home. Edmonton's public transit runs a regular schedule along Whyte Avenue, making getting around cheap and easy.

Downtown Edmonton is comprised of several distinct districts, including the Arts District, the Rice Howard Way Pedestrian Mall, the Warehouse District, and the Government Precinct, all of which offer an array of accommodations and other traveller amenities.

Parliament Buildings

Overlooking the river valley in Edmonton, Alberta's Legislature is an impressive structure built between 1907 and 1913. Free tours are offered daily for those interested in exploring this example of Beaux-Arts architecture. Accommodation near the legislature consists of extended stay suites in addition to regular hotel rooms.

Commonwealth Stadium

Commonwealth Stadium is the home turf of the Edmonton Eskimos, the local Canadian Football League (CFL) team. This stadium is the largest in Canada to still feature natural grass, which allows it to double as a venue for international soccer tournaments. Differing slightly in terms of rules from the National Football League in the United States, the CFL is popular with Canadian sports fans and those attending a game can expect painted faces, pom-poms and an abundance of cheering. Lodging in the immediate area is sparse, however there are some businesses that offer bus service to and from the games. Public transit will also deposit fans to the stadium.

Capital Ex Midway
Capital Ex Midway4

Capital Ex

Capital Ex (formerly known as Klondike Days) is an annual exhibition and fair that takes place during what are usually the hottest days of an Albertan summer. With midway rides, an arts and crafts fair, food concessions and live entertainment, the Capital Ex provides a solid ten days worth of activities and adventures. Located at the Northlands Park, the exhibition is easily accessed from several hotels in the immediate area or by Edmonton's public transit service, which provides numerous routes through the city.

Surrounding Area

The area surrounding Edmonton contains several suburbs and bedroom communities, including Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, St. Albert and Fort Saskatchewan. Each of these locations boasts a full compliment of traveller amenities and services and may better serve visitors doing business or vacationing outside of Edmonton's core. When making travel arrangements, be sure that your hotel is located within an acceptable distance to the attractions and sights visitors may wish to visit while in the Edmonton area.

Public Transit and Transportation Options

There are plenty of transportation options for visitors staying in the Edmonton area. The Edmonton public transit system is comprehensive and features stops throughout the city in addition to the immediate areas. Limousines, taxis and hotel shuttles can be found at the airport, offering another way to get around while in the city of Edmonton.
